Why are sofas so “sinky”?

frog-on-sofa.jpgI spent much of yesterday looking for a new sofa. With 4 children, our old family room couch has been through the wringer and is definitely worse for the wear.

As time went by, my husband and I realized that we have been spending much more time sitting on the floor. Why? Because sitting on the sofa made our backs hurt. Time for a new couch!

Yesterday we visited 3 furniture stores. In each place we were greeted by salespeople that wanted to help us. I guess most buyers want “that special look” to complete their room. We, on the other hand, only considered the look after the sofa passed the sit test. To our consternation, the pickings were slim. It seems that most of the couches we tried out were sinky. Not too different from our current couch.

Why is that?

I know it is a matter of personal preference but if I need someone to throw me a life preserver in order to emerge from the depths of a couch, then that is not the right furniture for me.

I will continue my quest for a firm couch but it seems that the road will be long.

Any suggestions?

I can relate — most sofas are too squishy and/or not ergonomic. The Ekornes sofas are very supportive and fit me well. You might also try the iconic Barcelona chairs at DWR. They don’t seem to carry the sofa, but it is basically a 4 seater version of the chair. http://new.ekornes.com/us/stressless/ http://www.dwr.com/productdetail.cfm?id=7200

Anonimouse,
Thank you for the good tips. I discovered that there is an Ekornes dealer close by – in fact it is a furniture store that I was not previously aware of. I am on my way to check it out this week. I am so happy to have some more options.

Maybe you could try a sofa lazy boy type recliner couch. I love the low back support and ours is a corner group the kids and both of us can all smuggle. It has fold down tables between the seats that serve us well. We got it several years back and it was pricey but we love it

Donetta,
Thanks for the suggestion. Your sofa sounds very family friendly – which is exactly what we need!

I agree completely! I think we’ve just been through an ugly sofa design period, the past 10 years or so, and a lot of cutting corners on the construction. That’s why throw pillows are so huge — we need them, to make the dam’ couch anywhere near sit-on-able! Seriously, I have to use 5 cushions to make it so I can sit on my couch for more than an hour without getting positively crippled in the lower back. Let me know if you find the sofa of our dreams, eh?
