Now that the school year is in full swing, our days are busier than ever.
Between school itself, homework, after school activities, and instrument practice, little time is left for anything else – and certainly not chores!
But I need the kids to make home a priority as well. The whole family benefits when the kids clean up after themselves and help with general upkeep.
Here is a list of 20 chores kids can do even when time is tight.
- Take the trash out.
- Collect trash from all household wastebaskets.
- Make their beds.
- Refill handsoap pumps in bathrooms.
- Collect bath and hand towels for laundry and put fresh ones out.
- Replenish Dixie cup, tissue, or toilet paper supplies in bathrooms.
- Set the table.
- Clear the table.
- Put toys away in playroom.
- Organize their bookshelves.
- Run the vaccuum.
- Clean out 1 drawer or area.
- Dust their room.
- Clean stuff out of the car (wrappers, books, toys, etc.)
- Get lunches or snacks ready for the next day.
- Pull weeds.
- Clean fingerprints off of doors/mirrors/walls.
- Put their own clean laundry away.
- Bring dirty laundry to laundry room.
- Create their own “To-Do” list for tomorrow.

Calista,
You are welcome!
Cammeel1,
Thanks for the comment. My kids are 11, 9,7, and 4. You see, I need their help around the house or I just get overwhelmed by the sheer volume of work!
My daughters are 4 and 6 and they have chores. I believe that as a parent I should start them off early. They are responsible for making there beds, dusting (saturdays ONLY), putting there toys and books away and seperating there clothes for them to be washed. They have fun helping around the house and it helps us too.
Turquoise – I am totally with you. When the kids do their chores family life is so much easier – and I am much happier. On the days that it seems like I am doing everything, I am exhausted and cranky when the end of the day arrives.
If you have an iPad, there is an App that can help with organizing kids and their chores. Also has a checkbook window that gives them some accounting training! http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/ichores/id398902259?mt=8 iChores
