Santosh,
I am so pleased that you stopped by my site and left a comment as well! Even when children are old enough to understand which sites are "good" and which are not - it is still important to know what is out there. They inevitably come across something accidentally and also natural curiosity comes into play. If you are aware of where the kids spend time online then you can counsel, advise, and generally be proactive.

Aruni and Techmama,
I am remiss by responding so late. Thank you for the compliments! And yes, Aruni, the time will come sooner than you can blink - so it is best to be prepared! ;)

Great tips. Our kids are still young but I know they will soon discover sites outside of Playhouse Disney on the Internet.

Mike,
You are right, the SafeSearch is easily undone and your site provides a good fix.

Given my children's ages they are more likely to come across an inappropriate site accidentally (by typing in a misspelled word etc.)so I use SafeSearch to filter the results.

I didn't know that there was an iGoogle gadget - thanks for the info!

Those are great tips. Thanks for putting these together in a concise list of 20 tips for online kids safety. Regarding Google SafeSearch, the settings are easily undone, so one option is to use or link to a page that has SafeSearch permanently set such as:

http://www.squirrelnet.com/search/Google_SafeSearch.asp

There's also an <a href="http://www.google.com/ig/adde?moduleurl=hosting.gmodules.com/ig/gadgets/file/101225699400204013983/GoogleSafeSearchv0.xml" rel="nofollow">iGoogle SafeSearch gadget</a> for iGoogle users.
