Bill,
I hear you! Numbers play a big part of the “busy-ness” factor. With four very involved kids, our afternoons sound much like yours. Even if only one child has an activity, the rest need to tag along for the ride.

My solution has been to enroll the others in activities as well – especially if they are in the vicinity of where I have to be anyway.

While that may eliminate an hour or so of boredom on the part of my other children – the overall effect is to make us even busier.

But I try to be a bit lenient when it comes to missing a day here or there. Sometimes free time is just “priceless”.

The situation I find myself in with my kids is that their mother books their time six days a week for extracurricular activities (three children times two activities each), and my time with them is completely controlled. I believe that Ext. Curr. is great, but there is a point where it is not doing anyone any good. When is there time for just play? The not-so-organized outside playtime, like tag, fox and rabbit, house and so on? riding bikes to anywhere? I see a lot of pressure put on my kids to “not let the team down”, despite being only 5 to 8 years old. For me, if they want to miss a day that shouldn’t be a problem.

Frustrated.
