As individuals, we all make traditional New Year’s Resolutions on January 1st. But as parents it is much more logical to make those promises to ourselves on September 1st (or whatever the first day of school happens to be). It is a good time for families to make a fresh start.
Personally, I am looking forward to the new school year and have a lot of goals for myself and for the kids.
This year my oldest child is headed to high school - and no I can’t believe it. His first day of kindergarten is still fresh in my mind. And one of the most important, yet difficult aspects of school continues to be organization – at least for our family. We juggle a lot of schedules around here – and staying one step ahead of everything is hard.
A few years ago I read the book by David Allen called Getting Things Done, and loved it. Although I am a very organized person, I was becoming overwhelmed by the sheer amount of paperwork and stuff that I needed to accomplish every day. This book gave me a starting point – a strategy to follow that I could probably stick with. Little did I know at the time – that there is a entire GTD movement and that this book has sort of become the Bible of those that follow it.
For me, it certainly helped. But throughout the years, I have modified, tweaked, and adjusted the methods to fit my way of thinking and working.
This coming school year, I have decided that my kids need a jolt of GTD too. Final exams last year created a very frustrating period in our home. The kids had papers everywhere – they could not find what they needed, and they were cramming material that should have already known. Binders were overflowing and falling apart as the year came to a close. So my first New Year’s Resolution for parents is to help my kids become and stay organized throughout the school year. And, yes, I will blog it and let you know what resources I have found that were helpful to me. In fact, we have already done quite a bit of preparation and I will tell you about that too.
My second resolution has to do with me. And it is quite a typical goal – exercise more. With the arrival of the school bus each morning, there is no excuse for me not to hit the gym on a regular basis. Working all day on the computer is not good for muscle tone, to say the least. I recently discovered the FitLinxx system and it is awesome. I will blog about that as well.
My third New Year’s Resolution for parents is to build my home business exponentially. There are so many traps to fall into when it comes to working from home. I know that we all struggle with work life balance – and when the office is at home, life sometimes gets more attention than work. Definitely not a successful business strategy. So, again with the arrival of the big yellow bus – comes a few hours a day of peace and quiet. Time to get busy.
And that is all that I will resolve for. Those three items alone should carry me to the real New Year’s – at which time I will reflect and revise.
