Last night I watched the Les Miserables 25th Anniversary spectacular on PBS.
I was just surfing channels and came across the program.
Because this is one of my FAVORITE musicals of all time – I was quite thrilled. And I proceeded to pull in my two younger children who had never seen the musical themselves.
But the 25th Anniversary show had a few pros and cons.
The singing was amazing – the talent of the actors just blew me away.
But there were no theatrics in this production. No dancing or acting, so to speak.
The singers would come up to the mikes and sing and then move on to the next song.
Yes, the lighting was quite good. But some of the story was lost. Especially on the kids, who had not seen it before.
I had to constantly explain what was really happening.
Like when people were injured and died (which happens a lot in Les Miserables) – it really wasn’t apparent, only implied.
However, on the plus side – since the actors were not dancing about the stage – I could really make out the lyrics to each song. So I came away from this show with a better understanding of the story.
I don’t know how long the Les Miserables 25th Anniversary show will be airing on PBS – but if you are a fan, you just might want to catch it.
