Yesterday the beautiful Kate Middleton wed Prince William – in a lovely Royal Wedding ceremony.
Just as we were waking up the bride was walking down the aisle.
I had the TV on and the kids gathered around to watch.
Later that night – it being a Friday and all – I thought it would be quite timely to watch the movie The Queen.
Coincidentally – we just happened to have it lying around the house. I had ordered it from Netflix about a month ago but never had time to watch it.
The movie was largely about the death of Princess Diana.
Princess Diana – an icon that my children didn’t really even know about.
As the movie progressed – we tried to explain all of the happenings, but the kids were quite unfamiliar with this part of history – so a lot of it went over their heads.
Fast forward to this morning.
My daughter woke up with lots of questions.
Questions about the monarchy.
Questions about Charles and Diana.
Questions about Camilla.
Questions about what could have been and questions about what is.
She wanted to know why there were books about William and Kate at Barnes & Noble even before the wedding.
She wanted to know why Charles didn’t marry Camilla in the first place.
She wanted to know who will be King if something happens to Queen Elizabeth, Charles, William, Harry, or Kate.
A Wonderful Learning Opportunity
After our conversation - I thought to myself – what an amazing opportunity this fairytale Royal Wedding provides us to discuss so many facets of life with our children.
We had talked about history, relationships, expectations, and the future.
We went beyond the Royal family – and projected it onto our own.
Marriage, commitment, love …
Moments like this are rare – snap them up!
