April 2011

Yesterday the beautiful Kate Middleton wed Prince William – in a lovely Royal Wedding ceremony.

Just as we were waking up the bride was walking down the aisle.

I had the TV on and the kids gathered around to watch.

Later that night – it being a Friday and all – I thought it would be quite timely to watch the movie The Queen.

Coincidentally – we just happened to have it lying around the house. I had ordered it from Netflix about a month ago but never had time to watch it.

The movie was largely about the death of Princess Diana.

Princess Diana – an icon that my children didn’t really even know about.

As the movie progressed – we tried to explain all of the happenings, but the kids were quite unfamiliar with this part of history – so a lot of it went over their heads.

Fast forward to this morning.

My daughter woke up with lots of questions.

Questions about the monarchy.

Questions about Charles and Diana.

Questions about Camilla.

Questions about what could have been and questions about what is.

She wanted to know why there were books about William and Kate at Barnes & Noble even before the wedding.

She wanted to know why Charles didn’t marry Camilla in the first place.

She wanted to know who will be King if something happens to Queen Elizabeth, Charles, William, Harry, or Kate.

A Wonderful Learning Opportunity

After our conversation -  I thought to myself – what an amazing opportunity this fairytale Royal Wedding provides us to discuss so many facets of life with our children.

We had talked about history, relationships, expectations, and the future.

We went beyond the Royal family – and projected it onto our own.

Marriage, commitment, love …

Moments like this are rare – snap them up!

The Great Hamster Massacre

When I received a copy of The Great Hamster Massacre by Katie Davies from Simon & Schuster for review – I was a bit skeptical. At first glance, the book looks lively and entertaining – presented in a Diary of a Wimpy Kid kind of way. But then the title starts to sink in … [...]

Cuisinart Keurig Review

Yesterday I purchased a Cuisinart Keurig – model SS-700 to replace my Keurig B70 single serve coffee maker. I loved my B70. We used it for years without issue. I cleaned it with vinegar monthly and took good care of it. But recently – it started to become unreliable. It would – what they call [...]

Do Bunnies Lay Eggs?

An Easter conversation that I won’t soon forget: Son: “Hmmm – I didn’t know that bunnies lay eggs.” Me: “They don’t.” Son – confused: “Then why does the Easter bunny bring eggs? Shouldn’t it be an Easter chicken?” Me: “Ummmmm……..” I guess he has a point. It matters not that he is eleven.

Books on Tape for Kids

I don’t know why I still call them Books  on Tape – after all, they generally are not on tape anymore. Even CD’s are probably outdated. Everything is on an iPod or iPhone. And I think the official term is – Audiobook. But whatever you call them – I have to credit them with my [...]

Unloading the Dishwasher

It is funny how the most simple things can create havoc with your day. Things like unloading the dishwasher. My Dishwasher Was King of the Kitchen Years ago, this would be my undoing. In the interest of saving energy, I would wait until the dishwasher was completely full to run it. Morning, noon, or night [...]
