Organizing

I am a digital girl – a gadget geek through and through.

My calendar is on my computer and it syncs with my phone via MobileMe (soon to be defunct) automatically.

In particular – I use Apple. iCal and Address Book are two apps that I can’t live without. When I make a change on one device it shows up on another – no muss, no fuss, no thought involved.

But every once in a while – I wonder if I am making the right choice.

I still miss appointments, forget paperwork, and feel a bit disorganized.

Maybe the old paper planner is a better choice?

And when I see these beautiful planners from momAgenda I wonder if I should make the switch back.

There is something to be said about a fresh, clean, piece of paper just waiting to be filled in. And using different colors of ink, and even adding a few stickers here and there for embellishment – just makes the whole process more fun.

Our family calendar is a complete logistical nightmare. With four busy kids, that participate in way too many activities (yes, the experts would definitely be lecturing me about setting limits – and over extended, stressed out kids) every day is filled and the schedule is completely varied.

Jotting down notes the old fashioned way does help to keep me on track. And having a physical book to keep everything anchored is pretty darn helpul.

Do you use a digital planner or a paper planner?

I am looking for new ideas here – tell me how you stay organized.

A new school year is just around the corner, and I want to start myself and the kids out right.

Talk to me ladies!

Summer Goals

For me, summer deserves the same attention that we give to New Year. The kids are home from school – the schedule is a little more laid back, and there is potentially lots of time to take on projects that you have been putting off for AGES! So, if we make New Year’s resolutions in [...]

43 Folders Made Portable

If you are a fan of GTD (the Getting Things Done method of organizing – made famous by David Allen) – then you are familiar with the concept of 43 folders. This is when you set up file folders for each day of the month (31 folders) plus a file folder for each month of [...]

First of the Month To Do List

I started a first of the month to do list. It might seem that my memory is not what it used to be. But here is what is really going on. I have more things to remember than I have brain capacity for. My brain is just too full. I wish it was like voicemail.  [...]

Unloading the Dishwasher

It is funny how the most simple things can create havoc with your day. Things like unloading the dishwasher. My Dishwasher Was King of the Kitchen Years ago, this would be my undoing. In the interest of saving energy, I would wait until the dishwasher was completely full to run it. Morning, noon, or night [...]

Scanning Old Pictures

While many people chose to relax this past Turkey weekend – I decided to put the troops to work and rearrange the furniture. What I realized is that many of my cabinets are filled with old photo albums – from the pre-digital age. Yes – dinosaurs do live here. These albums are taking up valuable [...]

Balancing Work and Home–Is This A Time Management Nightmare? Of all the issues that women face, balancing a career life and a home life is one of the most challenging.  When I consult with women in the workplace, inevitably questions arise about how can a woman attend to her career development goals and handle all [...]

One Family Calendar

Thumbnail image for One Family Calendar

The family calendar is a key component of staying organized. As I mentioned yesterday in my article on time management for parents – this tool is grossly underutilized. Often, people will make elaborate lists of things to do – but those never actually get scheduled. This causes frustration because the ever growing list soon balloons [...]

Time Management for Parents

Time management for parents is a key element of my post from yesterday  where I talked about setting up some New Year’s Resolutions(for the new school year, that is). My first to myself was to help my kids get organized and stay that way. Definitely easier said than done. And while I have begun to [...]

New Year’s Resolutions for Parents

Thumbnail image for New Year’s Resolutions for Parents

As individuals, we all make traditional New Year’s Resolutions on January 1st. But as parents it is much more logical to make those promises to ourselves on September 1st (or whatever the first day of school happens to be). It is a good time for families to make a fresh start. Personally, I am looking [...]
