Sync iPhone

How often should I back up my iPhone?

It seems obvious – but, really – it’s not.

Once you get an Apple iPhone – you start using it to organize your entire life.

Your calendar is in there.

Your contacts are in there.

Notes. Music. Games.

Everything but the kitchen sink.

Many people use their iPhone when out on the road, and their computer when at home. So syncing the two is a no brainer.

But an equal number of people – just use the phone. All the time.

This is the group of people that need to remember to sync up with their computers via iTunes from time to time.

Why Should I Sync?

If you are coming to iPhone from any other model phone – you might not be used to syncing and backing up your cell phone. In the “old days” a cellphone was only that – a device used for calling, and maybe texting other people.

But the iPhone is much more than that. Think of it as a pocket sized computer.

Software Updates

And just like any other computer – it runs software.

This software needs to be updated from time to time.

Apple takes care of this process through iTunes.

Just connect your phone to your computer and iTunes will let you know whether your phone needs an update. It will then download and install it for you automatically.

Back Ups

Another important reason for syncing up with your computer regularly is back ups.

When you connect your iPhone to your computer and perform a sync – iTunes will automatically back up your phone.

Should you need to replace your phone, then you will able to restore much of your old data to your new iPhone.

I had to do this recently and having a current backup was a lifesaver.

How Often?

So back to the original question – “How often should I back up my iPhone?”

Obviously, the more frequent, the better.

Put yourself on a sync schedule.

On your calender – make a note to sync your phone every – say – Monday evening, or every evening, or every other evening. Whatever works best for you.

A word of warning. If you haven’t synced and updated for awhile, then the process could take a long time – as evidenced by this thread. Make sure you do the backup at a time when you won’t need your phone and when you have the time to deal with it. It will save you some frustration.

Then if you put yourself on a regular sync schedule – the subsequent backups should not take nearly as long.

OmniFocus for iPad – Still Waiting

Thumbnail image for OmniFocus for iPad – Still Waiting

I am a big fan of OmniFocus for getting things done. You see, I think that the human brain has a finite capacity – and mine is quite undeniably full. To the point where I cannot be called upon to remember even one more thing. (ask my friend – who’s dinner party completely escaped my [...]

Is Technology Your Friend?

Today technology is not my friend. But I am optimistic. I recently purchased Bento for Mac. This is a home database program. Yes, very geeky. But I figured, hey – I have a team of six to manage and that means a lot of data. Schedules, phone numbers, soccer teams, all that kind of stuff. [...]

iPod Touch as PDA

How to Use your iPod Touch as PDA If you are a big Apple fan like me, you probably use your computer to keep yourself organized. Apple’s native applications like iCal and AddressBook are excellent organizing and productivity tools for any busy parent. Or, if you prefer, Microsoft Office for Mac works equally well. This [...]

iPod Touch as PDA

iPod Touch Now has Calendar Input When Apple first introduced the iPod Touch I was bemoaning the fact that the iPod Touch did not have the capability for calendar input. Most busy parents need to be able to input appointments on the go. Apparently Apple fixed that glitch with a little firmware update back in [...]

MacBook Air from an Apple Mom

I am a parent that loves all things Apple. So today, like so many other Apple devotees I watched and waited for Steve Jobs to deliver his keynote speech at MacWorld 2008. For the uninitiated future Applers out there, MacWorld is the annual conference where Steve Jobs introduces all the Apple goodies that they have [...]

No Calendar Input on iPod Touch

Boo! I was disappointed to learn that the upcoming iPod Touch will have no input capabilities for the calendar function. You can still sync your calendar to your computer but all input will have to be done on your computer. This dashes my hopes for PDA type functionality. It is a shame since the technology [...]
