How often should I back up my iPhone?
It seems obvious – but, really – it’s not.
Once you get an Apple iPhone – you start using it to organize your entire life.
Your calendar is in there.
Your contacts are in there.
Notes. Music. Games.
Everything but the kitchen sink.
Many people use their iPhone when out on the road, and their computer when at home. So syncing the two is a no brainer.
But an equal number of people – just use the phone. All the time.
This is the group of people that need to remember to sync up with their computers via iTunes from time to time.
Why Should I Sync?
If you are coming to iPhone from any other model phone – you might not be used to syncing and backing up your cell phone. In the “old days” a cellphone was only that – a device used for calling, and maybe texting other people.
But the iPhone is much more than that. Think of it as a pocket sized computer.
Software Updates
And just like any other computer – it runs software.
This software needs to be updated from time to time.
Apple takes care of this process through iTunes.
Just connect your phone to your computer and iTunes will let you know whether your phone needs an update. It will then download and install it for you automatically.
Back Ups
Another important reason for syncing up with your computer regularly is back ups.
When you connect your iPhone to your computer and perform a sync – iTunes will automatically back up your phone.
Should you need to replace your phone, then you will able to restore much of your old data to your new iPhone.
I had to do this recently and having a current backup was a lifesaver.
How Often?
So back to the original question – “How often should I back up my iPhone?”
Obviously, the more frequent, the better.
Put yourself on a sync schedule.
On your calender – make a note to sync your phone every – say – Monday evening, or every evening, or every other evening. Whatever works best for you.
A word of warning. If you haven’t synced and updated for awhile, then the process could take a long time – as evidenced by this thread. Make sure you do the backup at a time when you won’t need your phone and when you have the time to deal with it. It will save you some frustration.
Then if you put yourself on a regular sync schedule – the subsequent backups should not take nearly as long.
