How do you satisfy your reading obsession?

eBooks or Old Books – that is the question.

Why I Love eBooks

I love eBooks. Especially the ones from Amazon.com.

I can read them on a Kindle, on an iPad, or on an iPhone.

I can pick up any device and start reading from the exact page where I left off on a different device.

And as a busy parent – I never know exactly when I will be able to squeeze in a few minutes of reading here and there.

When Old Books Are Better

But in my house electronic reading will never completely replace their old fashioned paper counterparts – and this is why.

eBooks are Expensive

They can be cheaper than paperback or hardback novels – but they aren’t cheaper than the library.

As much as I would like to own everything that I read – the financial bucket isn’t bottomless.

How To Books

If I need a book on how to do something – how to take better pictures, how to knit a sweater, how to use a computer, etc. – I often prefer these in paper format.

I like to flip back and forth between chapters – or reference back to something I read a few pages back and compare it to what is on the current page.  Hard to do in e-format.

And if you have a Kindle – some diagrams don’t come through as clearly in the black/white/gray ink tones, as they would in full color.

Don’t Forget the Kids

If you want to expose the kids to lots of different genres of books – having the paper versions lying about is more effective than having the books trapped in a Kindle or iPad.

They might pick up a book because the cover is attractive, or because they are bored and see it lying on the table.

It brings a smile to my heart when I see a dog eared copy of a much loved book making the rounds from one of my children to another.

Amazon Kindle

The latest news is that the Amazon Kindle WiFi version is being offered for $25 dollars less – at a price of $114. The catch is that for the cheaper price, owners of this version will have to allow “sponsored” screensavers. Basically this means that when your device goes to sleep it will display ads instead of artwork. There will also be ads on the home screen but not on the actual book pages.

Personally – I think I would rather go ad free – but you can check it out for yourself:

Kindle Reader from Amazon.com

Have you heard about the Kindle from Amazon.com? It is a “revolutionary” ebook reader device. When I first heard about the Kindle a few months ago, I was skeptical. I have used ebook readers on my PDA and computer, and while convenient, I never became a regular user of the ebook reader. Also, the price [...]
