organizing

If you are a fan of GTD (the Getting Things Done method of organizing – made famous by David Allen) – then you are familiar with the concept of 43 folders.

This is when you set up file folders for each day of the month (31 folders) plus a file folder for each month of the year (12 folders).

Yep – that adds up to a grand total of 43.

As things daily – you file away any related papers, notes, and related stuff – in whatever day that stuff belongs to.

So, for instance – if your child is invited to a party on Saturday, the 16th of this month, you would place the invitation in the folder labeled “16″.

If the party was on the 16th of next month – you would place the invitation in the folder with the name of next month on it.

This is an awesome system. You can easily keep track of pertinent documents and clear up the clutter at the same time.

It is wonderful – if you work in an OFFICE.

But if your “office” happens to be your kitchen table, or your car, or the kid’s playroom, or wherever you can squeeze in a few minutes of work between changing diapers, wiping noses, and carpooling – then it might pose a slight problem.

After all, lugging 43 folders around with you, wherever you go – can be a bit awkward.

To make this system work for me – I came up with a portable set of 43 folders.

My Recipe for a Portable GTD Set of 43 Folders:

1 three ring binder (between 1 and 2 inches works best)
22 colored plastic pocket dividers, two sided, with holes to fit in the binder
Labels for the tabs

I labeled the first 31 tabs (front and back) with the number 1 through 31.
I labeled the next 12 tabs with the months of the year.
I use this binder just as I would an actual set of 43 folders.
This binder goes wherever I do.

Easy, and portable GTD.

Perfect for busy moms on the go.

Time Management for Parents

Thumbnail image for Time Management for Parents

Time management for parents is a key element of my post from yesterday  where I talked about setting up some New Year’s Resolutions(for the new school year, that is). My first to myself was to help my kids get organized and stay that way. Definitely easier said than done. And while I have begun to [...]

Processing Piles of Mail

The only thing that I hate more than unpacking after vacation – is processing the a pile of mail that could probably compete with Mount Everest. Usually, I pick through it and try to find the urgent stuff. The downside of this method is the rest of the mail sits for a looooooong time before [...]

Book Reviews

The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss No, this really isn’t an official parenting tips book. But I read it anyway because my workweek is way longer than 4 hours (more like 24/7) and anything that will help me cut back on all that overtime is definitely a plus. I know this book was all the [...]

Organize your Recipes

How do I organize my recipes? Easy! My recipe book is a three ring binder. At this point not too high tech. Eventually I would like to store all my favorite recipes on the computer. But for now I tape the recipe on an 8×11 piece of paper, slip it into a page protector (available [...]

Meal Planning Made Easy

“Mom, what’s for dinner?” is the question that I hate the most. Probably because it is hard for me to think that far ahead even if it is already 5:30p.m. Add afterschool activities and sports to that and cereal begins to look like the only option. Recently I purchased a calendar for the SOLE purpose [...]
