Call me Scrooge – but as a parent, I hate a good slumber party. Really.
It comes down to the work life balance mentioned in my previous article. Sleepovers equate to more work for me and that stresses me out – because I already have enough to do. And it doesn’t even matter if the event takes place at my house or at a friend’s place, the aftermath is the same.
Maybe it is because I already have four kids – that live here, in this house that seems to get smaller by the day. Kids that I can’t send home in the morning because I’m dead tired and I’ve had enough.
Whatever the reason, I just don’t like a sleepovers – and I am positive that my kids think of me as the slumber party grinch.
But tell me where in the parenting book does it say that we must throw these shindigs – and enjoy them?
Honestly, I don’t mind my kids hanging out with friends, but I like them to be home by a certain time, safely under my roof, without any company!
A good night’s sleep will guarantee an enjoyable weekend and a sleepover spells certain disaster. The crankiness, whining, and the edginess caused by too little shut eye – is something I can do without.
Enough ranting, and yes – I do remember what it was like to be a kid. And yes – I also seem to remember how much my own parents disliked a good slumber party.
